BOCA RATON, Fla. - The man who proclaimed University of Louisville football was on a "collision course with the national championship" has died.

Howard Schnellenberger led the Louisville program from 1985-1994, leading a revitalization of the program that included Louisville's first New Year's Day bowl game, a win over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl.

Prior to his arrival at U of L, Schnellenberger played football at the University of Kentucky and led Miami to the 1983 National Title.

Schnellenberger was 87.
